Less than 100 Days until Census night: Help shape the services your family needs

The 2026 Census is less than 100 days away, with Census night to be held on Tuesday 11 August 2026.
For families with young children, the Census provides the data needed to plan the local schools, parks, healthcare, and childcare services children need as they grow.
Emily Walter, Census National Spokesperson, said it was important to include everyone in your household on the Census.
“A common misconception is that young children or babies don’t need to be included on the Census, but they are one of the most important groups to count,” Ms Walter said.
“Every answer matters to ensure the Census produces the high-quality data your community needs.
“When you include your children on the form, you are providing the evidence needed to make sure your community has the right support for your family’s future.
“It helps government and local community organisations understand where new schools need to be built or where healthcare services should be expanded.”
Census data is used by organisations to ensure their services remain accessible and relevant to the changing needs of Australian families.
For example, Playgroup Australia uses Census data on the number of babies, their ages, and locations to identify gaps in their network and set up playgroups where they are needed most. This includes using data to plan more weekend and after-hours sessions for families where both parents work.
Life with young children is busy, so the 2026 Census has been designed to be accessible and secure:
- All information collected in the Census is protected by law and kept private. It is never shared with the police, Centrelink, or any other agency in a way that is likely to identify you.
- Any member of a household, including visitors, can complete the Census separately for privacy reasons.
- You will be able to fill in your form online, on your phone, tablet, or laptop, or use a paper form if you prefer.
